“As our network expands on Nantucket and elsewhere, we need a partner with scalable solutions that will give our customers a higher level of service,” said John Morrison, president of WiBlast Communications. “We chose Pronto Networks for their reliability, integration with disaster management capabilities, and excellent call center support in the municipal broadband wireless space.”
Larry Levine, former MediaOne and Road Runner executive, who has recently joined WiBlast, added, “Pronto’s sophisticated back office systems will allow WiBlast to expand our service coverage throughout Nantucket. Pronto furnishes WiBlast a flexible platform to provide additional services such as business class broadband Internet access and Voice-over-IP mobile telephony.”
The Nantucket Hot Zone deployment covers the downtown area, airport, Naushop subdivision and other venues. The network consists of several Pronto UniFi Service Controllers throughout the island, which channel traffic from 16 Tropos mesh routers mounted on private homes, businesses and town property to Pronto’s UniFi OSS Platform operated from a remote data center.
Pronto’s UniFi Service Controllers manage bandwidth and security access at the user level. The system’s back-office and service control functions include user registration, secure authentication, subscriber management, captive portal customization, and remote network management. Pronto’s network elements provide secure, reliable Internet access throughout the Wi-Fi hot zone.
As Nantucket’s population swells to nearly 50,000 during the summer months, up from roughly 9,000 the rest of the year, WiBlast offers short-duration service plans to meet visitors’ needs. Service plans range from $9.99 for daily access to $29.99 for weekly access and $49.99 for monthly access. For permanent residents and businesses, an annual plan is available for $24.99 per month. Residents and visitors to the island also have free web surfing access to the Nantucket community portal, www.ackblast.com, which provides local information and announcements. All credit card authorization, billing and reconciliation is performed by Pronto’s UniFi OSS platform. WiBlast also offers free access to the ACKBLAST.com portal which has information on local events, activities and attractions. Links to websites of participating local businesses are also provided free of charge.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with WiBlast in providing world-class, broadband wireless service to the renowned island of Nantucket,” said Jasbir Singh, president and CEO of Pronto Networks. “Our solution has been tried and tested in a myriad of different municipal environments, and we’re confident that our solution will continue to meet the needs of Nantucket and other municipalities well into the future.”
Pronto’s solution has been chosen by dozens of cities deploying metro-scale, broadband wireless networks, including Chaska, MN; Cerritos, CA; Corpus Christi, TX; Daytona Beach, FL; Fire Island, NY; Lompoc, CA; Tulsa, OK; and Wilmington, DE. Pronto’s main product — UniFi OSS — is an open, standards-based converged services platform that enables operators to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy broadband wireless networks and deliver next-generation applications and services. Pronto’s OSS can support any kind of municipal broadband network model – public, private, mixed-use, and carrier-neutral. This ability to support both mixed use public and private applications on one network, and to provide tiered Quality of Service (QoS) levels to different user groups, enables operators to deliver customized services while minimizing upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. The ability to support multiple VLANs and sublet excess capacity in a carrier-neutral, wholesale model helps cities earn a faster return on investment. Access-agnostic, Pronto’s OSS platform is future proof to emerging technologies beyond Wi-Fi, such as WiMAX and fixed mobile convergence.
