D-Link Adds Pronto’s Instant Hot Spot Firmware to Its Public/Private Gateway, Enabling Quick and Easy Setup of Commercial Wi-Fi Hotspots
San Jose – Wi-Fi Planet Conference & Expo Fall 2004 – November 30, 2004 – Pronto Networks, a leading provider of carrier-class OSS solutions for large Wi-Fi hot spot networks, and D-Link®, the global leader in the design and development of connectivity and communications technologies, today announced a jointly developed hot spot program that allows both small and large venues to easily and quickly turn multiple locations into revenue generating, wireless hot spots with centralized billing. The new D-Link AirspotTM Wireless Service combines the latest in Pronto Networks service management software with the award-winning D-Link DSA-3100 Public/Private Gateway platform, allowing new and current users the ability to customize a Wi-Fi service and start managing earned revenue immediately.
The new D-Link Airspot Wireless Service enables the venue owner to choose from four service plans offering considerable flexibility of pricing, splash page customization and customer support. Venue owners can select a plan with recommended pricing of $2.95/hour, $5.95/day and $18.95/month, or they can choose their own pricing. In each case, the venue keeps 100% of the revenue less minimal monthly processing charges. There are no signup or installation charges. Venues can also choose to offer Wi-Fi service for free for a minimal monthly charge to cover splash page customization and/or support.
Venues have several options for branding the initial splash page seen be customers, including uploading their company logo and adding page titles, or having a completely customized splash designed to match their corporate identity. Venues may also choose a default splash page provided by D-Link and Pronto. Several customer support and hotspot monitoring options are also available.
“We’re finding that venue owners want to customize the Wi-Fi service for their locations, as they know their clientele the best,” said Jasbir Singh, president and CEO of Pronto Networks. “Our flexible back-office platform allows venues to do just that. Some venues, such as hotels for example, prefer to offer Wi-Fi service for free to their guests, but still want to customize the splash page for their guests and provide customer support. Other venues, such as apartment buildings, would like to generate revenue from the Wi-Fi service and would prefer to set their own pricing,
as they know their local market and customer base well. The instant hotspot solution from D-Link and Pronto enable location owners to customize the Wi-Fi service to meet their business objectives.”
The Airspot Wireless Service is now available on the D-Link DSA-3100 Public/Private Gateway, the company’s flagship product for small and medium businesses wanting to deploy secure public and private networks. Current D-Link DSA-3100 owners can update their gateway with the instant hotspot feature by downloading new firmware from the D-Link support website at no additional charge.
To get started, a venue owner simply needs a high-speed Internet connection, a D-Link DSA- 3100 Public/Private Gateway, one or more access points depending on the size of the venue, and customers with Wi-Fi enabled devices. To activate the service, owners need to register for the Airspot Wireless Service via a setup wizard when configuring the D-Link DSA-3100. Once registered, the D-Link DSA-3100 is automatically connected to Pronto’s back-end system and the location is ready to offer Wi-Fi service. Location owners can then access an administration portal to monitor the usage at their location, view revenue reports, and make account and/or
configuration changes. For those venue owners requiring an in house, back-end management solution, a Pronto InspiraTM appliance, especially configured for the D-Link DSA-3100, is also available.
“Adding Pronto’s instant hotspot firmware to our public/private gateway further enhances our award-winning hot spot management solution,” said Steven Joe, president and CEO of D-Link Systems, Inc. “Enabling centralized billing across multiple locations and tiered, location-based pricing will provide venue owners to adjust pricing on the fly, manage limited time promotions and remain competitive with other local Wi-Fi access providers. This is just another example of our commitment to providing businesses with added value at no additional cost.”
To attract customers, venue owners are provided an e-marketing kit on a CD from which they can print an unlimited number of window stickers, table tents and quick start cards. Pre-printed materials are also available during the registration process for a $15 fee. Locations having signed up for the Airspot Wireless Service will also be automatically listed in leading hotspot directories from Intel and Jiwire.
“Currently, we are field testing the device at our hotel locations and will start offering the Airspot Wireless Service to our hotel, MDU, SMB and enterprise customers,” said Sudesh Kumar, CEO of IT Global Solutions, a network consulting, systems integration and wireless ISP and a D-Link distributor. “The combined solution from D-Link and Pronto is suitable for both large and small venues, as wireless coverage can be extended by including additional access points off the D- Link gateway. Plus, as venue owners keep most of the revenue from the Wi-Fi service, they will be able to earn a return on investment in just two to three months with minimal daily usage. So far, we are very satisfied with the feature set and performance of the DSA-3100 with the Pronto firmware, as we continuously strive to deliver innovative solutions to our customers and VARs.”
D-Link Airspot Gateway (DSA-3100)
The D-Link Airspot Gateway provides key management features and audit trails such as the ability to authenticate and authorize who can log on to the public LAN, how long users are connected, how much bandwidth is consumed and where users can surf the web. From the gateway’s web-based configuration menu “command center”, the storeowner can limit user access according to specific MAC addresses, direct customers to custom-designed welcome pages and manage web access and session times. The D-Link DSA-3100 can manage up to 250 user accounts in its database and it supports POP3, RADIUS, and LDAP external authentication for larger-scale Airspot networks.
The D-Link Airspot Gateway provides enhanced network monitoring capability to small to medium businesses. The gateway includes a high-speed routing engine, enabling store owners to track and store user traffic, providing a list of IP addresses visited and times logged on and off. If desired, business owners can gauge who is logged on by username, IP address and MAC address.
