The MetroZone Pilot Pack, an introductory, low-cost solution combines sophisticated back-office functionality with ubiquitous Wi-Fi coverage for quick and easy deployment
Corpus Christi, TX – October 13, 2004 – Pronto Networks, a leading provider of carrier-class operations support systems (OSS) for managing large scale Wi-Fi networks, and Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale broadband wireless networks, announced today the immediate availability of the MetroZone Pilot Pack. The MetroZone Pilot Pack is a complete, introductory solution enabling the fast, low-cost, and simple deployment of metro-scale Wi-Fi networks over a 1/3 to 1/2 square mile area. The companies are providing a live demonstration of their full, metro-scale Wi-Fi solution on October 14-15 in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the 2004 WiFi Summit presented by Public Technology, Inc. (PTI).
Offered for a limited time, the MetroZone Pilot Pack is a specially priced bundle consisting of all elements necessary to rapidly deploy a large scale broadband Wi-Fi network. The network can be deployed for pilot and testing purposes, or as a solid foundation on which a complete citywide network can be built. The kit contains one Pronto Hotzone Gateway with a Pronto OSS software license for up to 100 concurrent users and five Tropos 5110 outdoor Wi-Fi cells, and includes one year of technical support.
The MetroZone Pilot Pack will be distributed through Graybar, a Fortune 500 company. Graybar is the leading North American distributor of high-quality electrical, telecommunications and networking products an expert provider of supply chain management and logistics services.
“We are very excited to feature the MetroZone Pilot Pack,” said Edward Ludtke, National Product Manager of Graybar. “The best-of-breed solutions offered by these industry leading companies combine seamlessly to enable, for the first time, a single source metro zone Wi-Fi access and management system.”
The MetroZone Pilot Pack ships completely Boingo enabled, with simple user configuration. Boingo provides business travelers with a wireless broadband Internet connection to improve productivity while on the road. Through its Wi-Fi software and Roaming System, Boingo makes finding and connecting to Wi-Fi networks point-and-click simple and secure.
The Pronto OSS software and Hotzone Gateway combined on an easy-to-install appliance provides a range of subscriber access, billing, customer care and subscriber monitoring functions required to deliver and bill for Internet services. These advanced subscriber management functions include multiple authentication methods, customer self-service and customized branding on splash pages. Pronto’s solution manages all authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) functions, monitors system availability and performance, Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and customer care and billing functions. The OSS uses advanced SSL encryption and digital certificates to provide security for subscriber transactions, and supports corporate VPNs.
The Tropos 5110 Wi-Fi cell is an outdoor-optimized and ruggedized wireless mesh router based on the 802.11 standard. The Tropos 5110 quickly and economically uses the intelligent Tropos Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage over metro areas. The Tropos PWRP routes traffic wirelessly, eliminating up to 95% of the wired backhaul associated with traditional access point solutions. Tropos Wi-Fi cells form a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired backhaul failure and node failure. PWRP also scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry.
