Pronto Networks Announces A New Study Highlighting Key Usage and Revenue Trends at Successful Public Wi-Fi Locations

White Paper by TeleAnalytics Provides Insight into Successful Hotspots within Pronto’s Hotspot Managed Services

Pleasanton, CA – July 12, 2004 – Pronto Networks, a leading provider of carrier-class OSS solutions for large Wi-Fi hot spot networks, today announced a new white paper showing promising Wi-Fi usage and revenue trends at various types of locations within its Hotspot Managed Services including hotels, cafes, multi-dwelling units, RV parks, and marinas. The study was conducted by TeleAnalytics, a leading Telecommunications market analysis and strategic consulting firm.

Following are some of the findings based on data from Pronto-enabled Wi-Fi sites:

  • A number of Pronto-enabled multi-dwelling unit (MDUs) and hotels are attaining Wi-Fi penetration rates of more than 30% six to seven months after start of operations.
  • Hotspot users spend on average 1.5 hours in cafes, compared with just under 4 hours in Wi-Fi equipped hotels.
  • The busy hour is heavily venue dependent. Most often it is around 2pm in cafes, 9pm in hotels and approximately one hour earlier in MDUs, RV parks and other monthly subscription dominated venues.
  • Revenue per hotel room varies widely depending on location, pricing, Wi-Fi coverage and other parameters. Monthly revenue per room often exceeds $30.
  • Daily download volumes vary significantly by location type and pricing structure. Wherever flat 24-hour rates exist, users average more than 20 Mbytes in cafes and more than 50 Mbytes in hotels.

“There is an appetite in the public WLAN market for reliable revenue and usage data on various types of hotspots and for real insight into their daily operations,” said Jasbir Singh, president and CEO of Pronto Networks. “This study is a first of its kind. We hope that it will be useful to hotspot network operators as one of their benchmarks against which they can compare the performance of their venues.”

The purpose of the independent study, conducted by TeleAnalytics, was to analyze the adoption rates and revenue patterns in a number of hotspot locations and to glean insights that may assist network operators and system integrators with business and capacity planning. Usage, revenue and traffic volumes were studied at several types of locations including hotels, coffee shops, apartment buildings, hot zones, RV parks, and marinas. All data was made available via Pronto’s Operations Support System for broadband wireless networks.

“We found that a number of hotspot locations are actually doing very well,” said John Pantelidis, Principal Consultant at TeleAnalytics. “Given the right CAPEX planning, marketing, pricing strategy and location selection, hotspot operators can expect speedy service uptake. Same hotel Wi-Fi usage growth sometimes exceeded 150% in a single year.”
